Crystal Gold Mine in Idaho Offers the Only Underground Mine Tour in the Northwest

Located in northern Idaho, the Silver Valley is most well-known for its rich mining heritage--it's not called the Silver Valley for nothing, after all.  The area was loaded with mines that ended up producing over $6 billion in precious metals, making it one of the richest mining districts in world history.  Most of these mines closed long ago, but one has remained open for visitor tours:  the Crystal Gold Mine.  Offering the only underground mine tour in the Northwest, this is something you simply have to experience.

The only authentic 1880s underground mine tour in the Northwest can be found in Kellogg, Idaho.  The Crystal Gold Mine was one of the first hard rock mines in the Silver Valley, and you can experience it for yourself on this one-of-a-kind tour.

To find the Crystal Gold Mine, take Exit 54 on Interstate 90 to the Miner's Memorial.  Turn left on Silver Valley Road and drive for two miles until you reach the mine and connected RV park.

This particular gold mine was very prosperous during the 1880s, but like many of the mines in the area, was forced to shut down as the industry dwindled.  The mine was closed and hidden from view, only to be rediscovered in 1991.

Visitors who go on the guided tour can receive an in-depth introduction to this fascinating gold mine.  You'll learn all about how they drilled with "hand steels", how they were able to trace veins of quartz, and how they tested veins for gold.

You'll be in complete awe of what the mine looks like today.  Gorgeous stalactite crystals of smithsonite can be seen in a wide array of colors across the walls.  You may even spot a real gold vein if you keep your eyes peeled!  Just be sure not to touch anything in order to preserve the mine as well as possible.

Tours of the mine are offered seven days a week from March 1 through November 39.  They are closed on major holidays.  Admission costs $15 for adults, $8.59 for children, and $13 for seniors.  They also offer family rates and one free hour of gold panning with the purchase of a tour.

One of the most unique experiences in the Northwest can be found at this humble roadside stop.  For an experience that is both informative AND fun for the whole family, be sure to stop by the Crystal Gold Mine!
