To Kill a Mockingbird

What do you do when you know a person is innocent but defending the person will cost you your friendships and your well-deserved reputation in town?  Gregory Peck is brilliant in the movie “To Kill A Mockingbird,” who earned an Oscar for his portrayal of Southern lawyer Atticus Finch based on the novel by Harper Lee.  Set during the Depression, this movie seems to capture the time, place, and even the mood which brilliantly makes it a masterpiece.  In a small Southern town, a white woman accuses a black man of rape.  When no lawyer will step forward to defend the obviously innocent man of the crime of rape, Finch (Peck) puts his reputation on the line to defend the man.  As the trial progresses, Finch’s two motherless children deal with the pressure of their father defending a black man from the kids at school.  By the time the trial ends, although Finch may have damaged his reputation and friends, he gains the respect of his two children and a surprising twist from a neighbor who saves his children from an angry townsperson.

Look for Alice Ghostley, who played Esmeralda in “Bewitched” and also introducing Mary Badham as Scout and Phillip Alford as Jem, who portray Finch’s (Peck) children.
