Introduction
In the wake of another shooting that took place in Las Vegas
at a concert, Steven Paddock managed to carry several piles of guns into his
room on the 32nd floor, for three days at the Mandalay Bay Casino
and Resort. Security was obviously none
the wiser as Paddock managed to fire several rounds of ammunition at concert
attendees for several minutes as he reined gunfire before taking his own
life. Paddack was found in his hotel
room.
As the country is rocked by yet another shooting, is this a
wake-up call to toughen up on security?
The U.S. has seen numerous shootings at large gatherings and
schools. Here are 10 shocking mass
murders in U.S. history:
Pulse Nightclub Mass
Shooting, (Orlando, Florida) – June 12, 2016, 49 Deaths
Shots were fired around 2:00 a.m. by 29-year-old Omar
Mateen, a former security guard, at a gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida, where
he killed 49 people inside. Mateen, a
U.S. citizen, was killed by police during the shooting. His hate crime more than 50 people, as told
by law enforcement to ABC News. Mateen’s
wife, Noor Mateen, claims she attempted to persuade her husband from committing
the act, but was ultimately charged with aiding and abetting and obstruction,
despite pleading not guilty.
Virginia Tech
University Mass Shooting (Blackburg, VA) – April 16, 2007 – 32 Deaths
Virginia Tech senior, Seung-ho Chu, 23, after purchasing a 9
mm Glock handgun as well as a .22-caliber gun on March 13, 2007, shot and
killed several people at Virginia Tech—which included 5 professors and 26
students. He began in his dorm room
where two students were killed, continuing his rampage in classrooms across the
campus before taking his own life.
Sandy Hook Elementary
School Mass Shooting (Newtown, Connecticut) – December 14, 2012 – 26 Deaths
Adam Lanza, armed in a bullet-proof vest, 2 semiautomatic
handguns a Glock, and a Sig Sauer, walked into an elementary school, where he
killed 20 first graders and 6 adult staff.
Before the shooting, it was reported that Lanza killed his own mother,
Nancy Lanza, before turning the gun on himself.
Luby’s Cafeteria,
Killeen, Texas – 23 Deaths, October 16, 1991
After slamming his Ford Ranger truck into the window of Luby’s
Cafeteria in Killeen, Texas, George Jo Hennard, after making a the statement
“This is what the women of Bell County made me do”, according to the Killeen
Daily Herald, fired shots into the cafeteria where he wounded 20+ and killing
10 at the cafeteria. Hennard was found
in the restroom where he committed suicide.
McDonald’s Massacre,
San Ysidro, California – July 18 1984, 21 Deaths
Armed with a long-barreled Uzi, a pump-action shotgun and a
handgun, James Oliver Huberty entered a McDonald’s fast food restaurant, where
he fired shots at customers, killing 21 adults and children and wounding 19
others, including an elderly person and a baby.
Huberty was killed by a police sharpshooter an hour after the shootings,
according to The San Diego Tribune. According
to The New York Daily News, Huberty told his wife, “he was going out hunting
humans” before the murders happened.
University of Texas
Tower Shooting, Austin, Texas – August 1, 1966, 14 Deaths
U.S. Marine Sniper, Charles Joseph Whitman, carried a cache
of rifles, pistols and even a sawed-off shotgun to the observatory deck of the
university’s tower, where he fired shots at unsuspecting students, killing 14
and wounding 30 people. Whitman’s reign of terror ended when police officers,
Ramiro Martinez and Houston McCoy killed Huberty. The death toll was at 16, including Huberty’s
wife and mother, whom he killed earlier that day.
San Bernardino Mass
Shooting, (Inland Regional Center at San Bernardino, California) – December 2,
2015, 14 Deaths
The husband and wife team of Syed Rizwan, 28, and Tashfeen
Malik, 27, dressed in tactical gear and armed with assault rifles and pistols,
where they entered a Christmas party at the social services center where Syed
worked and fired shots at his unarmed colleagues, leaving 14 dead and 17
injured. The couple was killed when
police caught up to their car hailing bullets.
FBI agents confirmed the couple researched ISIS leader Abu Bakr
al-Baghdadi via the web.
Edmond Post Office,
(Edmond, Oklahoma) – August 14, 1986, 14 Deaths
After receiving a “poor performance” review, Patrick Henry
Sherrill, 44, entered the post office armed with three handguns and fired shots
at whoever was in sight, where he killed 14 of his colleagues and wounded 10
before Sherrill killed himself. It was
later determined that Sherrill feared he might lose his job.
In conclusion, the U.S. has seen many mass shooting happen
at large gatherings and schools. Is it
time for better security? Will this be a
wake up call to beef up security?
