My Sister's Keeper

What keeps a family together?  “My Sister’s Keeper”, directed by Nick Cassevetes (The Notebook, John Q), comes a story about a loving family faced with the challenges of a child’s illness.

Conceived to be a donor for her leukemia-stricken sister, 11-year-old Anna Fitzgerald (Abigail Breslin) decides to take control of her body when she seeks the representation of her attorney (Alec Baldwin) to medically emancipate herself from her parents.  Will this act of free will tear the Fitzgeralds apart, or will they learn what it means to really be a family?

Cameron Diaz shines as Sara Fitzgerald, an attorney who gives up her practice to care for her sick child.  She is faced with how to deal with Anna when she is sued by Anna over control of her own body, medically.  Representing herself in the case, Sara realizes the true strength she never thought she had.  Alec Baldwin is superb as Anna’s attorney who takes on Anna’s case because of a debilitating illness suffered by Baldwin’s character.  Sofia Vassilieva is Kate, the daughter stricken with leukemia.  A tragic twist comes to the fold in the courtroom when the family is faced with the truth of what really led to Anna’s decision.  The sad part of this story is the Fitzgeralds son, who tragically gets neglected as the family deals with Kate’s illness and Anna’s lawsuit.

This story will tug at your hearts in powerful performances by Diaz, Breslin, and Baldwin.  Better keep a box of tissues close by while watching this touching story.
