Word of the Day: Vicissitude

Vicissitude

[vi-SISS-i-tood]

Part of speech: noun

Origin: Latin, early 17th century

1.

A change of circumstances over time, especially in one’s life

2.

Mutability or change from one thing to another, or in a cycle

Examples of Vicissitude in a sentence

"No one can escape the vicissitudes of life and we all must adapt to the changes they bring."

"Plants and animals are continually going through states of vicissitude and entering new stages of life."

About Vicissitude

A permutation is one of any possible variations in which something could be arranged. Permutations can be changed up, and vicissitude concerns the changeability of something. They’re not quite interchangeable, but they certainly are synonyms.

Did you Know?

"Vicissitude" is one of those words with many slightly different variations, but all of them basically mean the same thing: change. It can have a negative connotation, referring to the vicissitudes of life such as death, illness, and hardship. Or it can be used simply to describe changes in the state of something over time. Whenever you want to describe fluctuations in life or nature, use "vicissitude."

Word of the Day: Bromide

Bromide

[BRO-miyd]

Part of speech: noun

Origin: English, 19th century

1.

A trite and unoriginal idea or remark, typically intended to soothe or placate.

2.

A compound of bromine with another element or group.

Examples of Bromide in a sentence

"She couldn't help but roll her eyes at the expected bromide coming from her father."

"His upcoming chemistry test was sure to cover the chapter on compounds of bromide. "

About Bromide

Bromine (symbol Br) is a chemical element discovered in the early 1800s. Its sharp and pungent aroma earned its name from the Greek word for stench. Creating a compound of bromine and another element will give you a solution named (other element) bromide. Silver bromide is commonly used in photographic development.

Did you Know?

We can thank the magic of chemistry for the definition of bromide as a commonplace, overused figure of speech. The sedative potassium bromide is no longer used as such today, but we can describe anything that is so dull it might put you to sleep as a bromide.

Word of the Day: Glissade

1
A way of sliding down a steep slope of snow or ice, typically on the feet with the support of an ice axe.
2
(Ballet) A movement, typically used as a joining step, in which one leg is brushed outward from the body, which then takes the weight while the second leg is brushed in to meet it.

Examples of Glissade in a sentence

"Attempting a glissade was the only way down the mountain."

"The glissade serves as the transition between the more difficult dance steps."
Glissade
ɡlə-SAHD
Part of speech: noun
Origin: French, mid-19th century

Word of the Day: Divination

Divination

[div-ə-NAY-shun]

Part of speech: noun

Origin: Latin, 14th century

1.

The practice of foretelling the future by supernatural means

2.

An especially strong sense of intuition or perception

Examples of Divination in a sentence

"The fortune teller was known for her divination skills, using tea leaves and tarot cards."

"His mother’s divination was so reliable that he always trusted her advice."

Popularity Over Time

Popularity over time graph

About Divination

Fortune telling is a form of divination. Practicers of divination claim to be able to predict the future by tapping into supernatural elements. Your grandmother may claim to have the second sight, you could play with a Ouija board, or you could go get your tarot cards read by a psychic — all forms of divination.

Did you Know?

Practices of divination can be found in almost every culture. Witches, shamans, fortune tellers, oracles, seers, and prophets claim to predict the future using rituals of divination. Whether you believe in their abilities to tap into the supernatural is up to you.

Word of the Day: Nadir

Nadir

[NAY-dər]

Part of speech: noun

Origin: Arabic, 15th century

1.

The lowest point in the fortunes of a person or organization.

2.

The point on the celestial sphere directly below an observer.

Examples of Nadir in a sentence

"At the nadir of his sales career, he decided to try a new path and go back to school."

"I couldn’t find the Ursa Major constellation, because it was positioned at my nadir."

Popularity Over Time

Popularity over time graph

About Nadir

Nadir was originally used as an astronomy term to describe the point in the celestial sky directly below the observer. For example, stand outside and look up at the sky. Now draw an imaginary line from that point in the sky down through your body, straight through the Earth and into the sky on the other side of the world. That’s the nadir.

Did you Know?

Nadir doesn’t have its own definition so much as it is the opposite of something else. It comes from the Arabic word “naẓīr,” which means opposite to the zenith. The zenith is the highest (or directly above the observer) point in the celestial sky, so it follows that the nadir is the lowest point.

15 Haunted Places in Idaho

Kit Kat Klub - Meridian

If the Kit Kat Klub was still operating, it would be much higher on this list, but the building was demolished in 2016. We don't know if the ghosts that haunted the former gentlemen's club still hang out in this location. Former guests and employees used to hear lockers' pounding backstage when no one was there. Perhaps, the ghost of an angry dancer that continued to have a bad night repeatedly for years.

Gott's Point - Nampa

This beautiful point between Nampa and Caldwell is home to nesting birds, a wildlife preserve, and, according to many, a ghost. Listed by OnlyInYourState.com as one of the best 8 places to see a ghost in Idaho, Gott's Point on Lake Lowell is said to be haunted by the spirit of a drowning victim. The young girl was water skiing sometime in the 70's when the accident occurred. Some say that you can see her gasping for her last breath late at night along the shore.

Satin Dolls - Boise

Once known as Night Moves, Satin Dolls is the gentlemen's club on State Street reported to be haunted. When guests and employees have taken pictures here, things had appeared that weren't there when the photo was taken. Cold spots throughout the building have been reported, and a ghostly little girl is frequently seen here.

Belmont Barbershop - Boise

Idaho's most notorious murder was that of Cora Dean, a woman who would frequent a bar in Garden City. One night she met a man named Raymond Snowden, who brutally murdered her that same night. Afterward, he dropped his knife in the gutter, he walked directly into the bathroom of Hannifin's Cigar Shop, now operating as Belmont Barbershop. Some believe that, along with the Old Idaho Penitentiary, he still haunts this location. People have said that they can still hear footsteps walking towards the bathroom, even when no one else is around.

Pete's Tavern - Nampa

The building that houses Pete's Tavern in Nampa has been around for over a century. Customers and employees alike have witnessed ghostly apparitions and creepy happenings inside. According to a report from KTVB, paranormal investigators have found four ghosts that call Pete's Tavern home. The bar is especially haunted in the back area that looks like a cave called "The Club."

Strangelove - Boise

Originally built to be an athletic club, the building has had many purposes since its completion in 1906. It's been a church, a strip club, a restaurant, and more. Over the past nearly twenty years, it's been home to various nightclubs. A murder was committed here in 2017, but the ghost that haunts the building is a woman who died in the in the 1920s. No one knows much about her, but she appears in pictures to this day.

Dry Creek Cemetery - Boise

Dry Creek Cemetery is a large burial ground in Boise. It dates back more than 100 years. Local legend says that you can hear a ghostly horse galloping by each night at 2:15am if you are outside this gate near the canal.

Idanha Hotel - Boise

The Idanha Hotel was the hot spot in Boise when it opened in 1901. Some say it's still a hot spot for paranormal activity. The building is currently home to Guru Donuts and apartments. Yet, when it was a hotel, it's guests included Theodore Roosevelt and William Howard Taft. Current residents have gotten to know some "ghostly guests." The murdered former bellman occasionally moves the elevator up and down at his leisure. A woman who was reportedly murdered in the basement of the hotel still lingers on the bottom floors.

Canyon Hill Cemetery - Caldwell

This picture was taken between two trees that face Canyon Hill Cemetery. It is said that if you park between them at midnight, a jogging ghost will tap your car's window.

Canyon Hill Cemetery - Caldwell

The main office of Canyon Hill Cemetery in Caldwell. The old, creepy building watches over the grounds which are said to be haunted by a "midnight jogger."

Owyhee Plaza - Boise

For many years, the Owyhee building in Downtown Boise was a hotel and, for many years, known as one of the most haunted locations in the Treasure Valley. Guests of the hotel would often report ghost sightings in their rooms, meeting spaces, or even the restaurant, which is still in use. The most frequent reports came from Room 136.

River Road Bridge - Caldwell

In Caldwell, the River Road Bridge is on the site where pioneers on the Oregon Trail crossed the Boise River. Having played the game growing up, you might think that the ghost stories would be generated by those pioneers. This haunting happened much later than that. The legend says that a woman hung herself off this bridge sometime after it was completed in 1922. Now, late at night, according to urban legend, if you park your car on this bridge and turn off your lights, you will see her shadow.

The Egyptian - Boise

A projectionist from the early days of the Egyptian Theater in the '20s is the man who haunts this venue. He had a heart attack and died while he was on the job. Now, he turns lights on and off and creates strange odors wherever he goes. The Egyptian was featured in Ghost Stories on the Travel Channel.

The Boise Murder House - Boise

The Boise Murder House is home to a bloody and disturbing tale. On June 30, 1987, three men had an argument in the basement of this home. A shot rang out that hit one of the men in the shoulder. There was a lot of blood, and he ran to a neighbors house for help. No one would answer the door. That's when the other two men drug him back into the house to finish the job. He was dismembered, and his chopped up body was put into the Brownlee Reservoir. The next day, police followed the trail of his blood back to the "Murder House." The man responsible was sentenced to life in prison, while the victim is said to still be in the house, haunting the basement.

Fort Boise Cemetery - Boise

On the surface, Fort Boise Cemetery looks like a peaceful place, but according to some, it's anything but. This inactive military cemetery is home to 274 military members and their families. Ghostly visitors here are said to include a woman and several children. A more recent paranormal investigation has revealed a former soldier named Jerry.

Old Idaho Penitentiary

Old Idaho Penitentiary is home to several hauntings. In these cells, many many men served times for doing the unthinkable. Some may still be serving time here, more than one hundred years later.

Old Idaho Penitentiary's Siberia

The Old Idaho Penitentiary's solitary confinement section is where the worst were sent when they couldn't be controlled. They spent their time in a cell smaller than a twin bed. Some of the worst times imprisoned were spent in these cells. Prisoners called it "Siberia," and some may have never left.

Old Idaho Penitentiary - The Gallows

The most infamous of all of the Old Idaho Penitentiary's inmates was Raymond Snowden. Snowden was convicted of murdering a woman in Garden City. He was known as "Idaho's Jack The Ripper" because of the gruesome way he killed his victim. Convicted for killing one, he bragged about killing others. It was in the newly constructed gallows in building #5 that he was put to death. He was the last person killed by hanging in Idaho, and the only one who's sentence was carried out in this building. Some say that they can still hear him gasping for air in this room, which is the most haunted in the entire prison.

Sharlie: The 'Loch Ness' Monster of Payette Lake, Idaho

In Idaho folklore, Sharlie (Slimy Slim, The Twilight Dragon of Payette Lake) is the name given to a sea serpent much like the Loch Ness Monster that is believed by some to live in the deep alpine waters of Payette Lake near McCall, Idaho.

The first reference to the sea serpent may be the belief of Native Americans, predating western settlement of the area, that an evil spirit dwelled in the lake.

Modern history

The first documented sighting by western settlers occurred in 1920 when workers cutting ties at the upper end of the lake thought they saw a log in the lake. The “log” began to move.

In August 1944 the serpent was reportedly seen by several groups of people who described it as 30 to 35 feet in length, with a dinosaur-type head and pronounced jaws, humps like a camel, and shell-like skin.

In September 1946 the serpent was reportedly sighted by a group of twenty people. Dr. G.A. Taylor of Nampa, Idaho explained that “it appeared to be between 30 and 40 feet long and seemed to keep diving into the water. It left a wake about like a small motor boat would make.”

In 1954 A. Boone McCallum, Editor of The Star News held a contest to name the serpent of Payette Lake. The winning name, “Sharlie”, was submitted by Le Isle Hennefer Tury of Springfield, Virginia. In her letter to Mr. McCallum she said, “Why don’t you call the thing Sharlie? You know – ‘Vas you der, Sharlie?” This was a reference to the popular catch phrase often spoken by Jack Pearl during his old time radio show.

Sharlie was reportedly sighted dozens of times between 1956 and the last documented sighting in 2002.

The University Of Idaho Was Once A Tiny School With Just 40 Students

The small town of Moscow, in northern Idaho, is home to the University of Idaho main campus. Every year, this public land-grant research university becomes like home to approximately 11,000 enrolled students. However, this university wasn’t always the large and bustling campus that it is today. In fact, if you look at the history of the University of Idaho, when this school first opened its doors, only a handful of students attended.

During these uncertain times, please keep safety in mind and consider adding destinations to your bucket list to visit at a later date.

Word of the Day: Madeleine

Madeleine

[MAD-ə-len]

Part of speech: noun

Origin: French, early 19th century

1. A small, shell-shaped cake

2. Something that evokes a memory

Examples of Madeleine in a sentence

"She served her favorite dessert, the madeleine, at her friend’s baby shower."

"A scent can be a powerful madeleine, bringing up strong memories from years ago."

About Madeleine

A mnemonic is a little more practical than a madeleine, but they both make you remember something. A mnemonic is a saying or phrase that helps you remember information — for example, the order of a mathematical formula. A madeleine might be a string of pearls that makes you remember your grandmother.

Did you Know?

Marcel Proust developed the second sense of this word in his novel, “Remembrance of Things Past.” In it, a character eats a madeleine, which causes a rush of nostalgia. The word can now be used for anything that evokes a strong memory.

Word of the Day: Potation

Potation

[po-TEY-shən]

Part of speech: noun

Origin: Latin, 15th century

1. A drink.

2. The action of drinking alcohol.

Examples of Potation in a sentence

"Sit down and join me for a potation."

"A majority of the plans for the bachelor party concerned copious potation."

About Potation

Head to your favorite watering hole, and order a potation. It’s not a fancy cocktail made by a mixologist; it’s just a drink. Potation is a bit of an old-fashioned term for a beverage, usually alcoholic. Bartender’s choice when you ask for a potation.

Did you Know?

Po-TEY-tion, po-TAH-tion. Actually, potation has nothing to do with potatoes. The Latin verb “potare” means to drink, and that turned into “potation” in Old French and then Middle English. The noun form means a drink, or the action of drinking.

Word of the Day: Transpicuous

 Transpicuous:

1
Transparent.
2
Easily understood, lucid.

  Part of speech: adjective

 Origin: Latin, mid-17th century

Examples of Transpicuous in a sentence

"After spring cleaning, my windows were transpicuous and sparkling."

"Your argument is well reasoned and transpicuous."

Wilson Ferreira Aldunate

Wilson Ferreira Aldunate (1919–1988) was a Uruguayan politician and a historically important member of the National Party.

Biography

He was Minister of Agriculture during the second National Council of Government with Blanco majority (1963-1967).

As a Senator he led the Por la Patria faction and made weekly radio addresses. He was among the more liberal members of his party and a fierce opposer of President Jorge Pacheco Areco.

He ran for president in the 1971 elections, with Carlos Julio Pereyra as running mate. He won the most votes of any candidate, finishing over 60,000 votes ahead of runner-up Juan Maria Bordaberry of the Colorado Party. However, under the Ley de Lemas system in effect at the time, Bordaberry won the presidency because the combined Colorado vote exceeded the combined National vote by just over 12,800 votes.

After the 1973 Uruguayan coup d'etat he had conflicts with the Civic-military dictatorship of Uruguay and was a leading non-Leftist to flee to Buenos Aires. He opposed the dictatorship from his exile in many countries; in 1976 he addressed the US Senate, denouncing human right abuses in his country and asking for a stop of US military aid to Uruguay.

On June 16, 1984 he returned to Uruguay only to be arrested, which led to protests in Latin America and Spain. As well as protests at home where his party wanted his release. He was released five days after the presidential election; the first thing he did when addressing the crowds was to offer "governability" to the new democratic government. The most critical moment was on the occasion of the parliamentary discussion and passing of the controversial Expiry Law, which Ferreira supported.

He died of cancer in 1988. On his death President Julio María Sanguinetti said "He lived as a gladiator and died a messenger of peace."

He is buried at Cementerio del Buceo, Montevideo.
